Student health is a high priority and CIS has several programs to help kids be healthier and prepared to succeed in the classroom.

  • The FIRSTSCHOOL Gardens– CIS partnered with BlueCross and BlueShield NC Foundation, Moore Regional Hospital Auxiliary, FirstHealth, The Town of Aberdeen Parks and Recreation Department and the Master Gardeners to provide gardens in 5 schools in Moore County to increase physical activity and provide healthy eating opportunities for school aged children. Teachers and students have embraced the opportunity to utilize the garden to provide learning opportunities in all subject areas – learning is aligned with NC state curriculum standards. Gardens have been awarded to Aberdeen Elementary School, Academy Heights Elementary School, Pinehurst Elementary School, Vass-Lakeview Elementary School and Pinecrest High School. Volunteers who love to garden and love children are needed at each school.
  • Healthy Communities Fitness Trail– This one mile fitness trail with circuit training exercise stations is located at Aberdeen Elementary School and provides students, teachers and the community with a safe, accessible location for planned exercise. Volunteers are needed to paint the black top area and beautify the grounds.
  • Sight for Students – Vision Service Plan (VSP) to assist children in need obtain eye care and eyeglasses through local optometrist who donate their time.
