FoodCorps seeks to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity by connecting vulnerable kids to healthful food. The centerpiece of our work is a national AmeriCorps program that recruits young leaders for a year of service in Farm-to-School and school garden programs in high-obesity, limited-resource communities of need. FoodCorps is the boots on the ground of Farm-to-School.
In order to educate people about food, we must start with the children…
Food Corps implements a three-ingredient recipe for healthy kids. Our service members will:
- Deliver hands-on-nutrition education
- Build and tend school gardens
- Bring high-quality food into the public school cafeterias
With growing public interest in locally raised food and garden based-education, the CIS FirstSchool Garden Program has been selected as one of the inaugural FoodCorps Sites in North Carolina. The FirstSchool Garden Program is only 1of 50 in the nation and 1of 5 in North Carolina that will launch this new AmeriCorps program. Our FoodCorps Member, Sebastian Naskaris will join the FirstSchool Garden Team on August 29 for a year of service in our community to improve the health of our children. He will instruct students in the garden through the FirstSchool Garden Program established in 12 schools focusing on healthy nutrition. He will also facilitate local Farm-to-School sourcing for our schools.
Join us in increasing demand for local healthy food while working to change what kids eat!
